40 years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever, but there is also an unprecedented opportunity to build a new future. Earth Day Revolution has the power to bring about historic advances in climate policy, renewable energy, green jobs, and to catalyze millions who can make personal commitments to sustainability by mobilizing the power of people to create change. This can be done by taking small steps in our homes, our schools and our businesses that add up to an enormous collective action. The Fair Climate Project is partnering with the Hip Hop Caucus for a HBCU Tour from Florida to Arkansas to North Carolina.

Earth Day Revolution is a pivotal opportunity for people, corporations, and governments to join together to create a global green economy. Our coordinated efforts now will be recognized by future generations as a turning point.

The declaration demands that the Senate to act on clean energy and climate change and it asks: “We have a question for members of the US Senate: Whose side are you on – Big Oil and their lobbyists or the Clean Energy Patriots?”

By Vanita Mistry

As part of the President’s National Day of Service I participated in a Green the Block event, hosted by Bridges Training Communities and Awakenings Movement, in Detroit’s Southeastern Village. Green the Block is a national event organized by the Hip Hop Caucus and Green for All to engage low income communities of color in the clean energy movement. The focus of the Detroit event was bringing the community together, educating the community about energy efficiency, and informing the community of weatherization resources available to them.

We started the day by going door-to-door in the neighborhood informing people about the Green-the Block event and leaving them with literature about energy auditing and home weatherization resources available to their community at little to no cost. The afternoon was spent grilling and socializing with members of the community, planting tire gardens, and providing the community with Energy Star certified CFL’s.

The evening ended with a panel discussion with representatives from NWF, Sierra Club, Repower America, local energy efficiency and sustainability experts and others. This was an opportunity for the community to be part of a conversation about energy efficiency and renewable energy and how Detroit’s residents will be positively affected

The event was a huge success and we look forward to working together as a community in the future.

The African American leaders fly-in was held May 4 and 5. Over 20 leaders representing 10 different states confirmed for our event gathered for the event. We’ve pulled together a wide range of leaders, from business owners, clergy, to professors.

The fly-in began with an afternoon of presentations and training on global warming and current proposed legislation. The following day, participants went to the Hill and met with their congress people.

In follow-up to the event, NWF is working with these leaders to coordinate in-district meetings, draft a collective resolution on climate change, and garner local media attention on climate change.
